Simple steps for smooth computer operation on the Internet.

Want to keep your computer running smooth, while your on the internet? About 50% or more, of the computer problems that happen can be avoided with some simple steps.

First, make sure to have automatic updates set for windows. I recommend it be set for every day. An update could come out on Tuesday, & if you only update on Sundays that would be 5-6 days without it.

Second, defragment your hard drive often. Windows recomends Defragment volumes after installing software or after performing an upgrade or clean install of Windows. Volumes often become fragmented after installing software, so running Disk Defragmenter helps to ensure the best file system performance. It is also good to defrag after long periods of use or during low-usage periods too. The best thing to do is Analyze volumes regularly and defragment them only when Disk Defragmenter recommends it. A good guideline is to analyze volumes at least once a week.

Third, use Disk Cleanup frequently. Disk cleanup, removes temporary Internet files, removes any downloaded program files(ActiveX controls and Java applets downloaded from the Internet), empties the Recycle Bin, remove Windows temporary files, removes Windows components that you are not using, & removes installed programs that you no longer use. I run disk cleanup daily, or every 2 hours on the internet.

A lot of times when I look at a computer that is not working or having problems, the reason is because these things need to be done. These are 3 steps are usually all I have to do to get the computer running good again.

You have included a few very good tips, but you left out a few very important tips for smooth surfing; anti-spyware, antivirus, a good firewall and set your browser to block third party cookies. Those four things will slow down your computer in a heart beat if you surf alot if you don't have them. Many people don't have a clue that they need them to guard against the preditors online.

I was mainly talking about keeping the operation of the computer, not really surfing in general, I should probably change the title
